Ian Wolterstorff is a Los Angeles–based ceramic artist creating sculptural and functional work.
His practice centers on wheel-thrown forms that evolve through an intuitive process that’s guided by proportion, rhythm, and visual balance. His work moves between functional objects and sculptural pieces designed for
everyday spaces.
Each piece is
handmade in small
batches.
Each piece begins on the wheel, shaped by hand and guided by instinct as much as plan. Forms are cut, carved, and pierced while the clay is still responsive, then fired in small batches from my Altadena studio. The work draws on the California desert — its light, its geology, its quiet monumentality — pared back to proportion, rhythm, and balance.
